Westfield heirs sell late brother’s Bellevue Hill mansion for $24m

22 Cranbrook Rd, Bellevue Hill, has sold for about $24m, sources advise.

A Bellevue Hill designer home owned by a Westfield heir, who died in July last year, has sold for about $24m — $6m less than the price guide of six months ago.

Although still listed on realestate.com.au with the listing agent Ashley Bierman of Ray White Double Bay, the incredible property at 22 Cranbrook Rd is shown as “sold” on the Sotheby’s site with Michael Pallier, who is the co-agent.

And word on the street is that the deal was done at close to $24m. Both agents have been contacted for comment.

The three-level residence was rebuilt in 2015.

The luxury home’s wall of glass allows views to the harbour.

The home theatre is one of the attractions.

The former house at 22 Cranbrook Rd was bought by the late Westfield co-founder John Saunders for £12,260 in 1962, and Westfield heirs Betty Saunders-Klimenko, Monica Saunders-Weinberg and their brother Mark Saunders grew up there.

Saunders Snr transferred the property to Mark, his only son, in 1996, for $975,000 and the patriarch died a year later.

In 2015, the family home was rebuilt by Tonka Andjelic Design and it’s now a three-level house with a lift, five bedrooms, games room, cinema room, pool and gym.

The home was still in Mark’s name when it hit the market on April 5 with a $30m price guide, but probate documents dated April 18 reveal Mark died on July 18 last year.

The property is now in Betty and Monica’s names.

There’ve been no reports about the death of Mark Saunders in the mainstream press, yet further investigation reveals that Betty, the owner of Erebus Motorsport, told the website V8 Sleuth last October that she’d been dealing with the death of her 59-year-old brother, Mark.

“It’s been only 10 weeks since my brother passed away,” she said.

And on Sunrise, she said: “He was a special boy, he was intellectually handicapped and we went through everything together even though he was intellectually handicapped.”

Very little had been published about Mark previously, except a brief mention in an AFR report in 2001 that said: “Saunders’ only son, Mark, suffered from learning disabilities and could not succeed his father in the business.”

In contrast, much has been written about Betty, most recently her second Bathurst 1000 win this year.

The billionaire Westfield heiress has gone on to become a successful businesswoman in her own right, and bought up five homes in Vaucluse at a cost of more than $23m to create a family compound for herself, husband Daniel and son Rick, along with two sons from a previous marriage.

And the other billionaire heiress, Monica, and her husband, Richard Weinberg, bought a Bellevue Hill mansion in 2010 for $20m, nabbing the house next door for $6m six years later for a tennis court and more recently $5.9m more for another neighbour.

The Cranbrook Rd property appeared as a Wentworth Courier House of the Week in April 9, when listed with Ray White Double Bay’s Ashley Bierman.

He said then: “This is an incredible property that really sets itself apart from others in the neighbourhood given its huge frontage and harbour views over Rose Bay and its district.”

The late John Saunders AO, along with Sir Frank Lowy, founded the original Westfield Plaza in Blacktown in the 1950s.

The pioneering shopping centre with its 12 shops, two department stores and a supermarket kickstarted a global multibillion-dollar retail kingdom.
