Under wraps: Headland House at Palm Beach
A lavish beachfront mansion under construction has been entirely shrink-wrapped – crane and all – in an innovative move to protect it from the harsh coastal climate.
In what is thought to be a state first, a scaffold tower and gantry crane was enclosed in thick plastic, creating a weatherproof worksite where a four-storey mansion will rise.
Mactech Constructions is behind the luxury project on Jefferson Lane, Palm Beach, dubbed Headland House and designed by Kin Architects for a Brisbane power couple.

The unique worksite was developed to enhance the quality of the finished product, and is one of the first of its kind used on a southeast Queensland residential project.
Mactech Constructions director Nick McDonald said plastic was laid over the scaffolding, then heat guns were used to shrink the cover to the form.
“Working with off-form concrete, there is no room for error and everyone wants a perfect finish, so there is a whole lot of pressure that comes with this type of construction,” Mr McDonald said.
“The aim was to create a controlled environment for the whole of the construction period to have more of a guaranteed finish for the concrete.

“We did come to a lot of stopping points, engineering-wise, in researching how to build the four-level scaffold and get it wrapped, because it also had to withstand strong winds due to its beachfront position,” he said.
It was an expensive solution, including engineering a temporary gantry crane system to lift heavy materials into the site and heavy-duty internal fans – but an added payoff was not losing any rain days over the 24-month build project.

Mr McDonald described the home as “one of our most intricate builds to date”, featuring smooth concrete curves, timber-lined interior walls, and an exterior screen of alternating solid and glass bricks.
Designed as the ultimate beach home for a large family who loves to entertain, the property comprises multiple areas for relaxation and celebrations, including an indoor-outdoor kitchen on the first floor leading out onto the sand, while the rooftop is given over to a showstopping glass-bottomed pool, bar and barbecue terrace, crowned by circular cascading greenery.
